Human Subjects Research Tutorial and Assessment

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has instituted a training requirement for key personnel on grants that include research involving human subjects.  This online tutorial and assessment is provided as a way for UCSD faculty, staff and students to meet this training requirement.

For those who prefer a classroom learning environment, the UCSD Human Research Protections Program offers classes on a regular basis that also meet the NIH training requirement and are recommended for anyone who is engaged in research involving human subjects.  Contact the HRPP office at 858-455-5050 for more information on these classes.

You may wish to view the Frequently Asked Questions list prior to starting the Tutorial.

You will need to identify yourself to the system so that your progress through the tutorial and completion of it can be stored in the Human Subjects office database system.  There are three ways to do this:

  1. If you have been an investigator or contact on a research project reviewed by the UCSD Human Research Protections program within the past five years, you can enter the project number (i.e., the 6 digit number assigned by the HRPP program, e.g., "941025"), the last name of the Principal Investigator and your own last name.

  2.
  3. You can submit an online registration form and you will be sent a personal ID number by e-mail that can be used to login to the tutorial.
